Explained
What is a transponder (chip) key?
A transponder key has a small chip in its plastic head. When you turn the key, the car's immobiliser reads the chip, and the engine only starts if the code matches. That is why a cheap cut-only copy of a chip key can open the door but will not start the car.
Copying a chip key therefore takes two steps: cutting the blade to match your key, and copying or programming the chip so the car accepts it. Which method works depends on the car, which is why we ask for the make, model and year first.
Why does a remote key cost more than a plain key?
A plain metal key is one cut blank. A remote key has a chip, a circuit board, buttons and a battery, and the remote part may need to be paired to the car as well. The price depends on the key type for your car, so it is quoted from your car details.
Covers and batteries
Can you replace a broken key cover or a remote battery?
Yes. A cracked or worn key cover (the plastic shell) can be replaced so the key and buttons are protected again, and a weak remote battery is changed at the counter.
